California Legislature Assembly Resolution

46th Assembly District; Relative to commending

WHEREAS, The relationship between a community and its nonprofit performing arts organizations is a vital and interdependent one, deriving its strength from the civic involvement and dedication of those who engage with such organizations, the many positive outcomes these organizations make possible, and the spirit of cooperation and respect they foster within the community; and

WHEREAS, One such laudable organization is Theatre West in Hollywood, which will celebrate its fifty-fifth anniversary during the year 2017, and it is appropriate at this time to highlight the organization’s numerous achievements and underscore the positive impact it has made internationally through its commitment to enriching the quality and accessibility of artistic programming; and

WHEREAS, Established in 1962, Theatre West is the oldest continually running theatre company in Los Angeles and is an internationally acclaimed nonprofit arts organization that has toured extensively, performing for appreciative audiences worldwide, including such locales as Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; New York, New York; Edinburgh, Scotland; Dublin, Ireland; and throughout California; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, some of Theatre West’s most loved plays have made their way to Broadway – Spoon River Anthology and Aesop in Central Park, and also to the big screen — A Bronx Tale and Faithful, and an impressive number of Hollywood’s brightest lights have made Theatre West their artistic home, some of whom include Betty Garrett, Lee Meriwether, Richard Dreyfuss, Carroll O’Connor, Harold Gould, Beau Bridges, Martin Landau, Bridget Hanley, and Philip Abbott; and

WHEREAS, An artistic cooperative dedicated to fostering the creativity of its members, Theatre West is devoted to its threefold mission to conduct workshops to further its members’ artistic growth, present performances grown from those workshops, and to provide outreach to the greater community, which is accomplished through education and partnering with local schools; and

WHEREAS, During the course of its long and impressive history, Theatre West has offered approximately 2,000 professionals over 5,000 workshops in acting, musical comedy, playwriting, improvisation, and Shakespeare, and produced over 250 plays, two-thirds of which were original pieces, while maintaining a free weekly workshop for young members, and also giving back to the community through benefits for local schools, the Valley Jewish Storefront, Hollygrove Orphanage, ALPA Health, Concern II, and Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event, among others; and

WHEREAS, Since its inception, Theatre West has been the recipient of several distinctive domestic honors, some of which include Tony Awards, Obie Awards, nine Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, seven NAACP Image Awards, and over 130 Drama-Logue Awards, as well as international recognitions, including the coveted Cover of the Scotsman at the Edinburg Festival in Scotland, Best Ensemble Award at the Dublin Festival in Ireland, and nomination from the BBC for Best of the Fringe; and

WHEREAS, Upon the occasion of its fifty-fifth anniversary, Theatre West is deserving of recognition for its remarkable history as a dynamic, purpose-driven organization that has worked tirelessly to enhance the quality and accessibility of the arts in the City of Los Angeles and beyond; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY ASSEMBLY MEMBER ADRIN NAZARIAN, That Theatre West be commended on the vital role it has played in improving the quality of life in the local, national, and international community, and extended best wishes for continued success in the future.
